Treatment options for bladder cancer depend largely on how advanced the cancer is.
Treatment usually varies between the first stage, bladder cancer that does not invade the muscles and bladder cancer that attacks the muscles.
Treatment of non-invasive bladder cancer:
If you have been diagnosed with non-invasive bladder cancer (CIS stages, Ta and T1), your recommended treatment plan is based on the risk that the cancer will recur or spread beyond the bladder.
This risk is calculated using a number of factors, including:
-the number of tumours present in your bladder
-size of bladder tumour
- if you have had a bladder tumour before
-the level or grade of cancer cells
Treatment of bladder cancer that affects the muscles;
The recommended treatment for prostate cancer depends on how advanced the cancer is.
Your urologist, oncologist and specialist nurse will discuss your treatment options with you, which may be:
-surgery to remove your bladder (cystectomy)
-radiotherapy with radiosensitiser
-Your urologist should also discuss the possibility that you may have chemotherapy before any of these treatments (neoadjuvant therapy), if appropriate.
