RIRS

Retrograde intrarenal surgery is a procedure for doing surgery within the kidney using a viewing tube called a fibrotic endoscope. In RIRS the scope is placed through the urethra into the bladder and then through the ureter into the urine-collecting part of the kidney, thus avoiding any kind of incision or cut in the body. The kidney stone is seen through the scope, fragmented by a laser and fragments grabbed by small forceps and removed. The procedure typically lasts 60 to 90 minutes, is done under anaesthesia and patient sent home the next day.
